Advent Sugeryness!

This is the best advent calendar I've ever had. We do have another one too, and that one takes After Eights. Christmas sweet bingeing commences.....

Rain Stops Play

Over the summer my work was featured in a lovely new gallery down the road from me.... it was the first time in ages that I had gone in somewhere with my jewellery to see if they would like to take it. The owner loved it, and I sold a fair bit of stuff. Which was nice.

I finally got around to re-stocking my selection, and tonight the gallery is having a wee open night. Kind of a pre Christmas thingy. I was meant to go but have been working all day and I'm knackered. Plus it's raining.... I'm not in the best of moods to chat with folk I don't really know. I love going along to these things when I'm a bit more with it, but the way I'm feeling just now I might just come across as a grumpy, reclusive designer. And that's not really me.

Nothing ever sells at open nights though, it's more of a drink-as-much-free-wine-as-you-can affair (remind me why I'm not going?!) and all the local gallleries are participating, so I suspect there will be quite a lot of in jokes and ego rubbing between the gallery owners who all know each other.

So I hope I don't miss anything good.... I always feel like that when I choose not to go out. Like everyone is having loads of fun and I'm a fool to miss out. Ho hum. Can't do it all.

Anyway, I hope it goes well....

I think her website is a little in need of updating....

TV On The Radio

Last weekend (or the weekend before, depending on how you look at it... ) I went to see TV On The Radio. I wasn't going to, I didn't have a ticket and was too skinty-poos to get one. Plus the gig was in Glasgow which would mean extra money for the journey....

But my very lovely friend bought me a ticket. So totally awesome and wonderful of her. And I got a lift through to Glasgow. Lots of excellent people were there (I was meaning my friends, but I am sure that there were others also), and the band were amazing. I love them.

There was lots of dancing and jumping from the drunken teenage indie boys down the front, who were so funny. They jumped around lovin' the band but kinda wore themselves out and a couple of them resorted to propping each other other up and swaying boozily. Bless. Dreamy eyed reminiscing of my mosh pit days.....

TV On The Radio have some great t-shirt designs which I am now going to go and see if I can browse....

I'm Back Baby!

Right, that's it. I'm gonna get back on the blogging horse. Or should that be wagon....

Either way I am going to make a concentrated effort. Cos it's fun! And I need more things to occupy me.... I don't really, but for some reason I like to give myself plenty on my plate.

So, yeah, let me know if you're still following along.....

Um, so I went on holiday, but it all seems like a lot of effort to organise a post about that. So here's pictures of the awesome Indian meal we ate in London on the way back. Veggie dosa for Richie and sag aloo for me. Without a doubt one of the best Indian meals I have ever had.

It was in this little place that was kinda like a cafe - all wood booths and super quick service, and it was AMAZING. Not pictured was the mango lassi we shared which made me swoon.

It annoys me so much that I am going to shout about it here, even though it's been a month since I posted.

There's an advert on telly that annoys me more that the others right now. I like to shout at adverts, it's like non-contact sport, but this one REALLY makes me shriek.

Laundry liquid, to wash your clothes y'know? It's nice if it doesn't smell of old shoes, and I appreciate that there might be some competition among laundry liquid companies to make the one that smells the best, but something that is scented with WHITE DIAMOND?

White diamonds don't smell. THEY DON'T SMELL! So it's all a lie and should NOT be a selling point.

And breathe.

When I Was Little....

There is a topic at Etsybloggers this month for one of the Blog Carnivals to write about something you did as a child and will always remember. I very much remember this one event which involved me being rather naughty but weirdly my parents don't remember it at all.....

They have a photo of me which is black and white and I am looking all cute and grumpy sitting on my tricycle. I have a stripy top on and the same haircut as the picture above. My parents think this is an amusing photo where I look all stroppy, but I totally remember why and they don't.

My parents live a fairly big town house with a garden out back. The garden leads out from the basement so if you are in their bedroom you are three floors up and looking out over the back garden. One summer (oh those glorious hot and hazy chidlhood summers) they had friends round and there were lots of people chilling out in the garden. I was inside mooching about possible having a teddy bears tea party and exploring.

I was in my parents bedroom and the window was open. On the dresser was a jar of Vicks Vaporub; one of those dark blue glass jars with a green lid. I vividly remember wondering what would happen if I threw if out the window.... so I did. Why?! I really think I wanted to know if it would smash. It did. And I got a big telling off. Which is why I am looking grumpy in the photo.

I love the fact that they don't remember me doing that.

Unfortunately I don't have that photo on my 'pooter, so I have posted one of me and my brother instead.

Boo! My latest batch of cupcakes didn't work. I mean, they taste really REALLY good, but I used my silicone baking tray and I think the cakes were a little too moist to remove successfully. So I kind of had to take them out in bits and reconstruct them. The red icing however, is a delight. Proper lovely.

Botanical Garden in My Home....

Phew.... I don't have an invasion of triffids in my bedroom. The aloe 'growth' was a flower, and a rather groovy one at that. It's fading now but did last a few weeks.... I captured it at it's best. Now, do I cut the long stem off once the flower has died, or do I leave it? Any botanists out there - your advice please!

New Items Listed!

I hve listed some new earrings in my shop.... I did make them a while ago but due to my slightly lazy tendancies I have only just got around to putting them on Etsy.

Ugh, I have a horrid cold. I am a very bad patient and will probably be making life hell for all those around me for the next few days. Sorry in advance if you are one of them...

The lovely Sally of sallers has featured an interview with me on her blog....

She is very unselfishly featuring lots of UK makers and getting all excited about the good stuff. That being all the handmade loveliness out there.

Check it out here!

Crikey. Look what my aloe plant has done. That whole long bit has grown in under 2 weeks. It's like Little Shop of Horrors. Should I be concerned?!

Warm enough for a bbq! Score!

I failed to take any photos of the actual stuff we put on the barbecue, but I did take a picture of the burger sweeties we had for 'dessert'. Beautifully layered gummy goodness.

The boys took charge of igniting the fires, though in the picture above, one of them is blowing gently into a cute pink bucket barbecue so I am not sure how manly that actually is.

And finally a photo of my slightly-not-so-new haircut. Still super happy with it.

Urban Dasies

Just around the corner from my flat is a grassy bit that is currently covered in these big daisies. It's like a wildflower meadow. I live right in the middle of the city, so it's kinda cool.

Detective Chocolate

Oh joy! My brother went to Croatia and brought me back this excellent chocolate bar. My family know me so well, bring me back amusingly titled candy from far off lands and I will be happy. This one is going in the keeper jar.... with all my other comedy sweeties. I very carefully opened it, extracted the chocolate bar and resealed the package. No one will ever know. It was just like a Toblerone. Yum.

Camera back in action. Phew. I bought a new memory card and the guy in the shop acted like I was a total fool when I said that the old one had broken. He had a look at my camera and found out that I was, in fact, right. Not just a pretty face my friend.

New Shopping Blog...

I have been included in the listings of a great new shopping blog at Desirable. It's a great new UK based design-lovin' blog with oodles of interesting online shops. There's high street style stuff too (very comprehensive listings) but a great selection of independants too. I'm in the "Independant Craftspeople..." section. Wheee!

The theme for one of the blog carnivals at Etsy Bloggers is 'what does success mean to you'.... which I was thinking about and is a tricky one....

I guess to a large majority of the world it's good job, money, home, family and possibly dog/cat/rabbit/chinchilla. But I don't think that's what it means to me. And if you are reading this then you probably agree with me and are going 'er, duh, obvious!'.

The small things are always the good things, so if you planned to sit on the sofa all day and pick your nose, and then that was all you did, I would call that success. No?

I don't do stress. I've done jobs that stressed me out and I hated them and don't do well with that sort of thing. So over the last 2 years I have created a life for myself where I don't get stressed and anxious and don't hate getting up in the morning. I have mutiple jobs doing different things and I enjoy doing them all. I don't have much (any?) money. But life is good.

So I guess what I mean is that success for me is if I manage to do some things each day which make me happy. Be that doing a good days work, making some jewellery or enjoying an afternoon nap without guilt. It means that I have successfully made a life for myself that I enjoy and am proud of.

And possibly the faint feeling of success that I got from writing this as I'm not very good at this sort of thing....

Poorly Camera

Well, the camera is ok, but the memory card has bit the dust. I'm sad. I had things I really wanted to take a photo of and write a post about.

I'm gonna write a list so I don't forget....

1. My new haircut
2. Camo Cat
3. My new dress
4. Jewellery in progress
5. Presents that my mum & dad brought me back from New York
6. Belated birthday present from Lorraine

On the plus side, I had a fab weekend! We went to watch Back to the Future at the outdoor cinema they had set up in town! (Edinburgh, Scotland.... not too warm....) We took sarnies and wine and pop corn and cheered lots at our favourite bits. Great scott!

And on Sunday I went for tea at my folks and ate outside which felt all summery and lovely. They told me stories of their trip to New York which sounded great, and showed me their photos... cue lots of cute shots of my mum with a skyscraper backdrop.

And I have booked Eurostar tickets for our France trip later this year. Carbon neutral holiday here I come! (Well, not totally carbon neutral, but oodles better than flying...)

Etsy Bloggers Featured Blogger...

Over at Etsy Bloggers the featured blogger of the month is Alicia Mae. She has so many shops and blogs and websites that it was kinda hard to know what to write about her! So I chose my favourite print from one of her shops. Go check out her out...

1000 Hits!

At some point today between 5pm and 11pm I reached 1000 hits on my blog! Thats since 23rd February this year.

I think it might be more than that actually, as I didn't add the counter immediately.

Hello to all you out there!

Oh what fun! I got this fab idea from Love One World Zero... Given that my memory card for my camera has decided not to work and I haven't bought a new one yet, I don't have any good pics of my own, so this is a sustitute... It's quite addictive and comes up with a great selection of photos.

Here's the rules....

a. Type your answer to each of the questions below into Flickr Search.
b. Using only the first page of results, pick an image.
c. Copy and paste each of the URLs for the images into fd’s mosaic maker.

Happy Friday Things...

Woo hoo! Yeah! I'm an Etsy Blogger of the Week. Katie, who runs BabyLyons Designs has featured me as her Etsy Blogger of the Week on both of her blogs. Here's the linky-links...

And here's a photo of me wearing ANOTHER band t-shirt. I don't buy a t-shirt at every gig I go to.... I was swithering for ages about whether to get the Bruce Sprinsteen one, and in the end I decided that it wasn't so much that I would regret it if I didn't, it was more that if I did buy it, it would make me happy every time I wore it. Which it has so far.

So, yeah, that's the psychology of my t-shirt purchase....

By the way, it says "Tramps like us, baby we were born to run". Hell yeah.

Blogger was being a bit grumpy earlier and wouldn't let me upload all the pictures I wanted to. So here is another one of the crowd.... Interesting.

Silly Face

Stoopid Face

Greasy Spoon Heaven

THE Tickets

So really what I should show is photos of Bruce Springsteen, but given that it was a staduim gig he was about the size of a raisin, I got no photos of him.

The concert was AMAZING. I know that I said he was the size of a raisin, but there were big screens and he's bloody good at what he does so it was all loud and fun and exciting. He played loads of my favourite songs and pulled proper rock-god moves. I am quite geeky about music, but not geeky enough to write out the set list... suffice to say he did 10th Avenue Freeze Out, Born To Run and She's The One....

The rest of the trip mainly consisted of shopping, drinking and eating. And Manchester is filled with great shops, pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants so all of the above were easily had in large quantities. And very good quality too.

We found THE best greasy spoon (see eggs on toast above) called the Abergeldie cafe, which I think everyone who visits Manchester should make a pilgrimage to. I bought a FAB dress, possibly a photo to come and went to LOADS of record shops.

The weather was great and we wandered.... which is just the loveliest thing to do on holiday.

Saturday, 31 May 2008

So before I tell you about Bruce Springsteen, let me tell you about Monotonix. Chronologically they came first....

We have never been to Manchester so decided to throw ourselves in at the deep end and got a cab miles away from our hotel to see Monotonix who we had heard were great and happened to be playing the first night we got there. Ace.

When we looked online to find the venue it seemed that it was a Turkish restaurant, which seemed odd, but two sources confirmed this so who were we to question the fact? I don't think the place had updated their website in a while because while it had the look of a neon fronted kebab cafe, inside it was a grimy music den, with a fab balcony to sit and drink Red Stripe on.

There was, like, 30 people there (of whom a third were probably with the two support acts) but that didn't stop Monotonix doing their thing. Hell no.

I have been trying for ages to think of how to describe this gig well enough to full convey the sheer excitement of it, and it's hard, but I'm gonna try....

They played in the middle of the room, they moved the drum kit and played at the side of the room, they moved the drum kit and played on the bar (see pictures above). They never stopped playing while they did this. I was in complete fear of getting man-handled/spat on/dragged to the floor and unashamedly used my boyfriend as a shield from the crazy Israeli dudes.

The singer hung out the window. He tied his microphone cord around the drummers neck and then dragged him off his stool and pulled him around the venue - the drummer kept playing. The drums were on fire - literally. He emptied bins from the bathroom over everyone. He stole the ice bucket from behind the bar. He invited fans to pour beer down his trousers. He used the bin bag to asphyxiate the guitarist. All the time they were playing amazing fast minimalist dirty rock.

It was intense, exciting, exhillarating, scary, fun, messy. And one of the best gigs I have ever been to.

And on the way back we hailed a cab, and the same guy who brought us down there happened to pick us up. I thought that was well spooky.

Tiddly Ramblings....

It's 11.50pm. I'm half packed to go away tomorrow. And half cut on vodka & apple juice.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN!! Freakin' awesome.

Just wanted to remind you all....

Settling Dust

The dust has settled. Literally. All over everything I own. The flat is a bloody dustbowl. Our hallway is being decorated. So here is a lovely photo I took the other day, because I definitely need something nice to look at.

This is the cumulation of two weeks of my life not being like my normal one and I am greatly looking forward to the dust settling for good. And being able to wipe it away.

1. I had to work two 6 day weeks in a row covering my managers holiday. Ugh. (Cer-ching on the money front though)

2. I got entirely fed up of the room we were using as a combined jewellery/music/computer den. Much as it was a great idea to have a dedicated 'creation suite' there was just too much stuff and not enough space and I could never really make it a homely and a proper place to create. So I moved out and took over the living room. Richie now has a the whole room to himself and I have a place to dump his shoes when he leaves them in my way.

3. This meant me investing in a laptop so I didn't have to go in that room at all, even to use the computer. So I bought one. (Yay - using it right now! Beautiful shiny new toy) I bought it online so waited a week for it to arrive and it was totally worth it. We also had to set up a wireless wotsit - which was a total palava.

4. The decorators came to sort out our hallway. (Big ole leak a few months ago which left the walls water damaged, and the landlord has only just got around to sorting out) This is great as the flat will be so much nicer, but in the meantime, there is dust.

5. Due to all the changes I have been declutter-clearout-charity shop giver queen and that has kept me very occupied.

All of the above have meant that I just haven't been blogging or designing in the last two weeks, so if you missed me shout 'YEAH!'.

On Tuesday we are going to Manchester for a few days, by which time the decorating will be finished and life can resume as normal.

We're going to see Bruce Springsteen in Manchester. I might pee my pants with excitement.

Anywhere good to go in Manchester that you would recommend?

The Silver Jews Rock

Last weekend was AWESOME! On Friday I went though to Glasgow to see The Silver Jews who are my most favouritist band just now. The gig was fantastic, but my camera ran out of power so no photos of Dave & Cassie. However, I bought a t-shirt so here's a photo of me about to go to bed in it.

On Saturday I went to see Skeleton Bob who are also amazing. And my boyfriend plays the bass with them. I saw lots of my lovely friends and drank cans of Red Stripe.

On Sunday I went for luch with my mum and bought a new jacket.

In all a top weekend.

Now I have to work ALL WEEK. Which is bad. Poor me. 2 days down, 4 to go.

So I am very busy, but will get back on track with the guess-the-plant-competition next week. (I am taking photos as they grow)

Cake. I want cake.

Roll on 6 o'clock.

Carrot. Definitely.

Mystery Growing Things....

I found some seeds lying around and decided to plant them. As opposed to eating them, which was probably the better decision. I think I shall catalogue their growth over the next few weeks and let you know how they are getting on....

Even better, I'm not gonna tell you what they are. There are two different types of plant-y thing. Oooo lets have a competition! SUCH fun. I will take photos as they start growing and the first person to get both correct will win.

I'm not sure what you'll win yet. But I will think of something. So get guessing. And possibly also start suggesting prizes.

Broken Van...

Everytime I walk home from work I see this van and I have been meaning to take a photo of it for ages. It's a little beat up old VW camper and the sticker on the back is great. I don't know if it's genuine (I hope so) or a joke, but either way it makes me laugh.

On Sunday evening I went out for a few drinks with some friends I hadn't seen in a long time. I walked home after feeling like I had been on the best 1st date ever. I forgot how well we get on and how much being with good friends can make you feel so good. YOU ROCK!

Blogger Glitch...

Hmmm, that's strange. Someone pointed out to me that they were unable to leave comments on the last post (Crime Isn't Funny). Dunno what happened there. But you seem to be able to leave comments on this post. So if you were itching to comment on the last post, do it here!

Crime Isn't Funny...

It really isn't. But this is funny in an 'oh-my-god-I-can't-believe-it' way. We were walking home from a friends flatwarming (in the wee small hours as you might be able to tell by the light. How did it get so late?!) and saw this van. Someone had driven it into the height restriction bar, and, well, you can see the result.... They just abandoned it there.

It's like someone took a tin opener to it.

Funny Story

So I was wondering what to do blog-wise today and for some reason had been thinking about this funny thing that happened when I was a kid. So I'm gonna tell you...

My dad isn't a vet. He's a biologist - animal physiology to be precise - of the academic sort. Teaching, writing papers, advising and the like. But when I was a kid he was who family friends would come to for advice on pets. Balding cats, smelly hamsters, limping gerbils - you get the idea.

One of our friends, who lived round the corner, had a goldfish. It belonged to Jack who is my age and was about 5 at the time. One evening my parents got a phone call to say that the fish wasn't very well and would my dad be able to come over and see if there was anything he could do. (I think my dad did his PhD on guppies so perhaps they knew that and thought that he would be the fountain of all aquarium fish knowledge.) Jacks mum is a little prone to melodrama and I think that combined with a very upset little boy prompted the phone call....

So my dad popped round to be friendly and neighbourly and I think fully expecting to say there was nothing he could do, and flush the fish down the loo.

The fish was floating in the water at the top of the tank. Not moving. Dead looking. My dad, feeling the need to do something more than declare the time of death when faced with a stressed mum and a crying child, lifted the fish out of the water and gently gave it mouth to mouth.

As he carefully blew into the fishes mouth, something shot out of the other end.

He placed the fish back in the tank and it swam off happily.

Apparently it was constipated. And I do believe that the fish lived for many more years.

True story.

Web Site Wonder

I LOVE this website...

It's just not the same leaving notes around the house for your live-in boyfriend but perhaps I should start as a joke...

Feelin' all floppy today. Possibly I need a flapjack.

New Necklace!

Newly added to my shop.... re-stocking after the clear out. Having a little trouble with aligning photos on blogger today. Hmmmm....

I have been interviewed! Oh I feel famous. But I'm not. I don't know if I answered the questions as well as others have done, so go here to either find out more about me, or laugh at my wiffle...

Kelly is a dedicated blogger (More than one! Busy lady...) and spends a lot of her time interviewing other artists, which is great as we all need a bit of help sometimes.

Yummy Indian Food

On Friday we went for dinner to celebrate my brothers birthday. A fun night was had. And the food was wonderful. I had an amazing fish curry but my photo of that didn't do it justice. However my brothers ice cream was very photogenic as were the flower lampshades and the swirly stain left when I dropped some red onion on the tablecloth. Whoops.
